Free Godot Assets: CC0 Models, Textures and Kits for Godot 4

Where to get free Godot assets you can ship: CC0 models, textures and HDRIs from Kenney, Quaternius, Poly Haven, ambientCG and more, and how to import them.

Free Godot assets are easy to find and easy to get wrong: the licence is what decides whether you can ship them. This guide lists free sources whose own pages state their licence, says what each is good for, and shows how to bring the files into Godot 4 so they look right the first time.

The short list

  • Greybox a 3D level today: our free Prototype Kit (CC0), nine pieces that snap into a GridMap.
  • Game art in one style, 2D and 3D: Kenney (CC0).
  • Low-poly 3D characters and props: Quaternius (the packs we checked are CC0; each pack page states its licence).
  • PBR textures and HDRI skies: Poly Haven and ambientCG (both CC0).
  • A huge low-poly model search: Poly Pizza (the licence is set per model).
  • Anything else, including music and sound: OpenGameArt (the licence is set per asset).

Our own free downloads

Everything in our free library is original and CC0, made for Godot 4.7, and tested on the Forward+, Mobile and Compatibility renderers. The Prototype Kit has nine greybox pieces on a 1 m grid that paint into a GridMap, with collision on the solid pieces. The library also has four shaders (water, toon, sprite outline and pixelate) and two templates: a first-person controller and a 2D platformer.

Kenney

  • Licence: its support page says “all game assets on the asset pages are public domain licensed (CC0)” and that attribution “is not required”.
  • Commercial use: “You’re free to use them, even in commercial projects.”
  • What it has: 2D, 3D, UI, audio, pixel art and textures, much of it in a shared style.
  • Note: Kenney does not give engine-specific import support, so use the import steps below.

Quaternius

  • Licence: stated on each pack’s page. The Furniture Pack we checked says “License: CC0” and “free to use in personal and commercial projects”.
  • What it has: low-poly 3D model packs. The Furniture Pack we checked offers FBX, OBJ and Blend files.
  • Formats: check each pack, and prefer glTF where it is offered.
  • Note: the all-in-one bundle is offered through Patreon; check each pack’s page for its own download.

Poly Haven

  • Licence: “Our assets are all licensed as CC0”, and “You do not need to give credit or attribution”.
  • Commercial use: “You can use our assets for any purpose, including commercial work.”
  • What it has: HDRIs, PBR textures and 3D models. The Godot documentation itself points to Poly Haven for free HDRIs.
  • Note: the CC0 covers the assets, not the site’s logos, example renders or text.

ambientCG

  • Licence: “All ambientCG assets are provided under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal License.”
  • Commercial use: free to use “even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission”, with no credit needed.
  • What it has: PBR materials, decals, photo textures, HDRIs, terrain and some 3D models.

Poly Pizza

  • Licence: set per model, with a licence filter on its explore page. Check each model before you download it.
  • What it has: over 10,700 free low-poly models, by its own count, “ready to use in any Unity, Unreal, Godot, Blender or VR/AR project”.
  • Formats: “OBJ, FBX and GLTF”. Pick glTF for Godot.

OpenGameArt

  • Licence: each author picks one: CC0, CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, OGA-BY or GPL. CC-BY requires you to “credit the original artist”.
  • Commercial use: its FAQ says you can use the art “even in commercial projects”, as long as you follow the asset’s licence.
  • What it has: 2D and 3D art, textures, concept art, music and sound effects.
  • Note: preview images are “All rights reserved” unless noted. Use the downloaded files, not the previews.

Bring 3D models into Godot 4

  • Prefer glTF 2.0 (.gltf or .glb). The Godot documentation marks it as the recommended format.
  • FBX imports directly in Godot 4.3 and later, through the built-in ufbx importer.
  • .blend files import only if Blender 3.0 or later is installed and its path is set under Editor Settings > Filesystem > Import > Blender. This is not available in the Android and web editors.
  • OBJ imports as a mesh, not a scene, by default. Load it into a MeshInstance3D. OBJ has no skinning, animation or PBR materials, so use it only for static props.
  • Apply transforms in your modelling program before exporting. Godot is Y-up, and its cameras look along −Z.

Make textures and skies look right

  • Normal maps: Godot expects the OpenGL style (Y+). If a texture set offers both OpenGL and DirectX normal maps, use the OpenGL one. A DirectX map needs its green (Y) channel flipped.
  • HDRI skies: add a WorldEnvironment, set its background to Sky, and give the Sky a PanoramaSkyMaterial with the HDRI as its panorama. Use .hdr or .exr for real lighting and reflections; .png and .jpg are not HDR.
  • If a bright HDRI makes reflections sparkle, enable HDR Clamp Exposure in the image’s import settings and reimport.

To compare materials and skies in a controlled scene, follow our 3D lighting and materials guide. If an imported scene comes out dark, our dark 3D scene checklist walks through the usual causes.

Keep a licence file in your project

When you add an asset, write down where it came from and its licence in a CREDITS.md or LICENSES.txt at the project root. CC0 assets need no credit, but the note saves you from guessing later. It also lists every CC-BY credit your game must show before release.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get free assets for Godot?
Kenney, Poly Haven and ambientCG publish everything as CC0, so you can use it commercially without credit. Quaternius states a licence on each pack, and Poly Pizza and OpenGameArt set the licence per item. Our own free library has a CC0 prototype kit, shaders and templates made for Godot 4.7.
Can I use free assets in a commercial Godot game?
Yes, if the licence allows it. CC0 assets need no credit. CC-BY assets require you to credit the author. Share-alike licences such as CC-BY-SA or GPL can add conditions, so read them before you ship.
What 3D format should I use in Godot 4?
glTF 2.0 (.gltf or .glb) is the format the Godot documentation recommends. FBX imports directly in Godot 4.3 and later, .blend files need Blender 3.0 or later installed, and OBJ imports as a static mesh without animation or PBR materials.
